Explain the concept of angular momentum in relationship to sporting activities.


In figure skating, the movement of the arms can reduce the skater’s moment of inertia. Drawing the arms inward, toward the body, will reduce the distance between the axis of rotation, and reduce the moment of inertia as more mass closer to the axis (the body) results in a smaller moment of inertia and makes it easier to rotate. Because angular momentum is conserved, the angular velocity with increase to compensate.
